The aim of the present study was to better understand general patterns and regulating factors of the bacterioneuston, i.e. the bacterial community of the uppermost top of the water column (sea-surface microlayer – SML). To do so, bacterial abundance, productivity and diversity were analysed over a three-year period in the SML and the underlying water (ULW) of the Baltic Sea as well as during mesocosm experiments. Taken together, this study shows a strong influence of the ULW and meteorological forcing on the SML but also the potential for a succession of bacterial communities in this unusual habitat.
