Dust from North Africa is regularly transported over the North Atlantic Ocean and plays an important role as a source of nutrients (especially iron) for the tropical and subtropical areas of the open ocean. Mineral dust was detected in sediment trap samples of two deep-sea moorings situated in the subtropical North Atlantic. The aim of this study was to identify North African source areas based on the clay mineral composition, to document the temporal variability of dust input and to capture a possible effect on primary production due to atmospheric nutrient input.
