Humanity is reliant on and attracted to the marine environment. In order to make use of its resources and to protect it guidelines and directives were/are being developed which can be implemented through spatial data infrastructures. In the marine domain such SDIs are called marine spatial data infrastructures (MSDIs) and Germany began developing one (MDI-DE) in 2010. This thesis builds and uses a framework to assess other MSDI approaches, suggests a reference model for MDI-DE, evaluates services resp. monitoring tools and implements a tool to make the most of existing marine vocabularies.
