The collection of artificial eyes of the University Medicine of Rostock does not only represent the history of ophthalmology in Rostock but has also been of relevance for the ophthalmological science in the 19th century. 132 pathologies of the anterior segment of the eye were visualised within the collection. Partly based on the atlas of ophthalmology by A. P. Demours, the collection is also connected to the scientific work of the ophthalmologists K. W. v. Zehender and A. Angelucci. Thus, the collection reflects both challenges and developments of ophthalmology in the mid 19th century. |
