This Thesis describes the origin, mechanism and development of the SPS as well as its applications in nanomaterials synthesis, diamond synthesis and biomaterials synthesis especially titanium based biomaterials. Chapter 1 introduces the background. Chapter 2 concerns the study on the indirect evidences for the presence of plasmas in SPS. Chapter 3 reports the synthesis of diamond from nanocarbon and graphite by SPS.
