Bycatch of marine mammals and seabirds in gillnet fisheries is a hazard for conservation globally. This dissertation considered the case of the German gillnet fleet in the Baltic Sea to generate an understanding of fishers ́ social practices to inform bycatch mitigation management. As a result of qualitative methods, I identified 3 types of fishers´ agency and 2 forms of bycatch practices, differing between normalizing seabird bycatch and non-normalizing bycatch of marine mammals. I discussed the results in light of fisheries management and derived recommendations for management measures.<fre>
