Our work investigates mesoscale energy cascades at UTLS altitudes using a mechanistic GCM. Results are twofold: 1) SIC is fulfilled for the 1st time in a GCM for turbulent diffusion of horizontal sensitive heat and momentum. 2) Spectral budget analysis showed that simulated KE and APE spectra can be explained by SMT theory extended by GW energetics. Such that on aver SMT is a result of the energy deposited by superposed saturated GWs. Also, energy deposition of GWs is not captured unless SIC is fulfilled.
