The comprehensive chemical description of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) of complex drugs is an analytical challenge. This also applies to bituminosulfonates. This study addresses the in-depth chemical description of the APIs and their characteristic manufacturing process via applying and adapting comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (GCxGC HR-MS). As a result, it describes comprehensively and in detail the chemical identity of the bituminosulfonates and their manufacturing process at the molecular level.
