The respiratory and local health effects of flavors in alternative nicotine delivery systems (ANDS) are not well understood. This dissertation aimed to develop an in vitro risk assessment strategy for ANDS flavors and identify oral nicotine pouch (ONP) ingredients. Further, the impinger method was optimized for collecting flavored aerosols. Based on the results, a tiered testing approach is advised using submerged and Air-Liquid Interface cell models. Further, standardized testing guidelines for flavoring compounds in emerging ANDS are needed for comprehensive safety assessments.
