Agriculture is facing major challenges due to climate change, which require a reassessment of land use. Rewetting peatlands can reduce GHG emissions and provide income options. A dynamic archetype analysis shows that site-specific measures could improve the resilience of farms. German peatland protection policy is identified as a ‘wicked problem’, with barriers that highlight the gap between its importance and conservation efforts. A cost analysis shows that current rewetting subsidies are insufficient; therefore, the development of value-added opportunities for rewetted areas is crucial.
