This dissertation focused on benthic oxygen (O2) dynamics in two different settings of the shallow coastal water of the Southern Baltic Sea: the Sandy Coast and the Bodden Coast. At the sandy coastal setting, benthic chamber incubation was carried out to investigate benthic O2 distribution and metabolism in microphytobenthos (MPB) dominated permeable sandy sediment under different light, transport, and nutrient regimes using various O2 measurement techniques. At the Bodden coastal setting, mesocosm experiments were performed to investigate the impact of bioirrigation on benthic O2 dynamics.
