Sediment analyses in two Baltic estuaries (Warnow and Schlei) reveal a robust grain-size–MP relationship, enabling granulometric normalisation that accounts for hydrodynamic bias. A machine-learning–based predictive modelling pipeline uses grain size, water depth and spatio-temporal discontinuity to map MP distributions from limited observations. The work is supported by validated laboratory workflows, novel separation and immobilisation methods.</field><field name="mods.abstract">Diese Arbeit verbessert die Quantifizierung und vergleichende Inventarabschätzung von Mikroplastik (MP) in aquatischen Sedimenten. Sedimentanalysen in zwei Ostseeästuaren (Warnow, Schlei) zeigen eine Korrelation von Korngröße und MP, was eine granulometrische Normalisierung ermöglicht die hydrodynamische Verzerrungen beachtet. Eine Machine-Learning-basierte Modellierung nutzt Korngröße, Wassertiefe und räumlich-zeitliche Diskontinuität, um MP-Verteilungen aus wenigen Beobachtungen abzubilden.
