This work addressed key challenges in the evaluation of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs) which promise spectacle independence after cataract surgery. A novel rotationally averaged image-processing algorithm significantly improved image quality, signal-to-noise ratio, and focus localization compared with conventional methods. Furthermore, near-infrared illumination was shown to distort the optical performance of diffractive MIOLs, potentially leading to false conclusions. These findings support the development of more accurate evaluation standards and improved clinical assessment of MIOLs.
