Abstract: Tumour regression was graded in a consecutive series of 75 patients with advanced rectal cancer receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiation. For 12 patients, absence of extramural vital or regressing tumour was recorded, indicating pretherapeutic overstaging. In comparison with a stage-adapted control series of 58 patients without pretreatment the densities of CD4+ T-lymphocytes, CD83+ dendritic cells and CD57+ natural killer cells in mesorectal lymph nodes were observed to be significantly reduced. Densities of CD8+ T-lymphocytes did not differ.
