Abstract: In the present work the synthesis of D-galacturonic acid N- and C-glycosides is described. Several protecting strategies were investigated for the synthesis and structural characterization of 1-azido and C-allyl galacturonates as suitable building blocks. Derivatization of azido and C-allyl moieties is described resulting in biotinylated compounds which can be used for the synthesis of labelled pectin fragments. Such biotinylated fragments are useful tools in biochemical assays.
