Abstract: An equation of state for hydrogen in the chemical picture is set up with the help of the Fluid-Variational-Theory and Padé-approximations. Considered are the states molecul, (unbound) atom, and ionized atom (proton and electron). The equation of state can also be used for the other isotopes of hydrogen (deuterium and tritium). This equation of state is compared with experiments, simulations and other models in the chemical as well in the physical picture. Especially the range with a supposed phase transition to hydrogen with metallic like conductivity is examined.
