Abstract: In Germany ethnic minority self-employment has increased in recent years. We use the Statistics of Business Notifications to describe the start-up activities of foreigners from 2001 to 2005 on a regional level. Multivariate regression analyses show the relevance of regional conditions for the number of business registrations. In addition we conduct a survey among minority entrepreneurs. The individual level analysis reveals characteristics of the entrepreneurs and their start-ups. Information about the start-up process indicates that the main issues are a lack of consultancy and financial restrictions.
