Abstract: Sequences of methyl benzoate and methyl salicylate synthesizing enzymes (SAMTs and BSMTs) were isolated from different Nicotiana species. The Nicotiana SAMTs use salicylic acid as preferred substrate, while Nicotiana BSMTs prefer benzoic acid. Phylogenetic analyses of Nicotiana SAMT and BSMT revealed two paralogous lineages of genes which have been generated by gene duplication. The expression patterns were investigated via RT-PCR.
