Abstract: The present study explores the influence of the transfection of rat immortalized neural progenitor cells with neurotrophic factors ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) on the biological properties as well as on the expression of the morphogen Wnt-5a. There are differences concerning these properties between native, CNTF-transfected and GDNF-transfected cells as well as to sham-transfected cells. In conclusion transfection of neural progenitor cells of ST14A-type with the neurotrophic factors CNTF and GDNF improves biological properties in view of thier transplantation in animal models of neurodegenerative diseases.
