Abstract: An automatic physiological control method for rotary blood pumps is proposed. A pulsatility index (PI) is calculated from the pressure difference across the pump. The gradient of PI with respect to pump speed (GPI) is estimated via on-line system identification. By controlling GPI either to its extremum or to a fixed value, the set point for control of PI is automatically adapted to the physiological conditions. Maximum ventricular unloading with the highest feasible flow rate or a medium degree of unloading and controlled opening of the aortic valve are selectable as therapeutic options.
