Abstract: Studies underline positive effects of Erythropoietin in myocardial ischemia. Herein, an intracardiac Erythropoietin therapy (MI-EPO) following myocardial infarction in rats was examined versus an infarction control group (MIC) and healthy animals. Physiological and biochemical testing throughout 6 weeks revealed enhancements in global cardiac function, physics, infarction size, cytoprotection and myocardial remodeling in MI-EPO compared to MIC. For the first time, an induction of SDF-1 and stem cell chemoattraction were documented and could be responsible in part.
