Abstract: In this thesis a process model for usability evaluation of smart environments was developed. As tool support the concept of a virtual smart environment was implemented. It facilitates the integration of evaluation and development with an increasing percentage of real entities and a decreasing percentage of virtual entities. Support for four scenarios of use is provided: (1) the cognitive walkthrough of models, (2) "wizard of oz"-experiments, (3) the generation of artificial sensor data and (4) an anonymized replay of captured data of user studies. Hence solutions are presented for paving the way to establish the paradigm of user-centred design for smart environments.
