Abstract: Photorespiration is essential for plants in today’s atmosphere. Deletion of any of the core enzymes of this pathway results in a severe air-sesivity of the respective mutants. This study represents the only exception from this general rule. Deletion of the peroxisomal hydroxypyruvate-reductase (HPR1) only leads to negligible effects on plant growth. Detailed analyses of the AtHPR1-mutants results in the identification of the alternative HPR2 and provide evidence for participation of the cytosol to photorespiration.
