Abstract: Hydrogen bonds in ionic liquids (IL) are studied in this work by using a combination of spectroscopic and theoretical methods. Far infrared spectroscopy serves as a direct probe for H-bond strength. H-bonds fluidize imidazolium-based ionic liquids, the corresponding vibrational frequencies can be correlated with measured enthalpies of vaporization. Protic ILs exhibit hydrogen bond networks. Overall, variation of the H-bond strength allows a “tuning” of physico-chemical properties of ILs. The single cation dynamics is accessible from NMR relaxation rates via suitable correlations.
