Abstract: The aim of the present study was to simulate the psychosocial stress component of weaning by a 4-h maternal deprivation and social isolation of suckling piglets. The consequences of psychosocial stress on the interaction of neuroendocrine and behavioural stress reactions and the effect of social support on these processes were examined. Psychosocial stress by maternal deprivation and social isolation causes activation of the HPA system and decreased behavioural adaptation to stressful events. The negative effects of maternal deprivation and isolation can be attenuated by social support.
