Erziehung im Tierreich : Eine vergleichende Perspektive

Abstract: German-speaking countries are influenced by a long tradition of philosophical anthropology according to which humans cannot exist without culture or education and vice versa. However, the term education or “Erziehung” is not clearly defined. I provide an overview of these definitions and find criteria which can be used to identify “Erziehung” in other animals. A literature review reveals that “Erziehung” can be found in many species – especially in the non-human primates. A comparison of different taxa provides the basis for a statement about the evolution of “Erziehung” – including in humans.
