Abstract: This thesis deals with the evolution photorespiration from cyanobacteria toward plants. Based on phylogenetic trees and biochemical analyses of the photorespiratory enzymes, it was shown that photorespiration is a very old process, predating the establishment of oxygenic photosynthesis. In some cases, the phylogenetic analysis identified a close relationship of plant and cyanobacterial proteins involved in photorespiration. These plant proteins most likely arose from the endosymbiotic event in which the engulfment of a cyanobacterium led to chloroplasts in extant plants and algae.
