Abstract: Cyanobacteria species are capable of fixing nitrogen and some of them can produce toxins. They therefore play an important role for the water quality of the Baltic Sea. Satellite remote sensing allows effective monitoring of wide areas in a high temporal frequency. In this study, a model-based inversion algorithm was developed, that offers the detection and quantification of cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea besides common standard parameters. The algorithm is based on bio-optical modelling and artificial-neural-network inversion. It was validated with in situ data from different sources.
