Die goldkatalysierte, aerobe Spaltung der dihydroxylierten Ölsäure (9,10-Dihydroxystearinsäure)
führte zur Bildung der C9-Hauptprodukte Azelain- und Pelargonsäure sowie der C8-Nebenprodukte
Capryl- und Suberinsäure. Während für die Synthese der C9-Hauptprodukte der Mechanismus
der oxidativen Dehydrierung postuliert wird, erfolgt die Bildung der C8-Nebenprodukte
vermutlich entlang einer basenkatalysierten Hydratisierung α,β-ungesättigter Ketone
mit anschließender oxidativer Spaltung.

The gold-catalyzed aerobic cleavage of the dihydroxylated oleic acid (9,10-dihydroxystearic
acid) led to the C9 target products azelaic acid and pelargonic acid as well as caprylic
acid and suberic acid as C8 by-products. Based on all results obtained an oxidative
dehydrogenation mechanism is assumed for the synthesis of the C9 products. The formation
of the C8 by-products can probably be explained via a base-catalyzed hydration of
α,β-unsaturated ketons followed by an oxidative cleavage.
