Abstract: The gold-catalyzed aerobic cleavage of the dihydroxylated oleic acid (9,10-dihydroxystearic acid) led to the C9 target products azelaic acid and pelargonic acid as well as caprylic acid and suberic acid as C8 by-products. Based on all results obtained an oxidative dehydrogenation mechanism is assumed for the synthesis of the C9 products. The formation of the C8 by-products can probably be explained via a base-catalyzed hydration of α,β-unsaturated ketons followed by an oxidative cleavage.
