Abstract: In case of an oil spill, the combination of wood based oil-binding materials and indigene oil-degradation microbial inoculum gives an efficient tool to bind the oil, including whole classes of hazardous substances like n alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Moreover, it facilitates and accelerates the naturally occurring oil-degradation process in the Baltic Sea without additionally polluting the ecological system. The microbial oil-degradation could be detected in the water phase as well as on the oil-binding materials, by adding Baltic Sea typical amounts of nutrients.
