Abstract: This work systematically investigates the applicability of ionic liquids as quenching media for the very first time. Special attention is spend on the cooling power, homogeneity and interaction between component and liquid. Therefore, immersion quenching of different materials are carried out. The investigated pure ionic liquids show no film boiling. This indicates a low potential for distortion which is proven by experiments and simulation. The cooling rates can be increased significantly by addition of water or carbon dioxide.
