Abstract: Affective states can be described by a two dimensional model, measuring the state of arousal on the one hand and the valence on the other hand. Valence is the more relevant dimension when it comes to animal welfare. The focus of the thesis is the cognitive bias test, an approach developed to measure the valence of affective states based on optimistic or pessimisticevaluations of ambivalent stimuli. The goal of this thesis was to provide and validate a test design which is suitable for the usage in pigs comprising the multifaceted characteristics of affective states.
