Abstract: In oceanography, for simulation of deep‑sea currents, the seawater density is determined using equations of state. The standard equations TEOS‑10 and EOS‑80 are based on 40‑year‑old density measurements on standard seawater, whereof the measurement uncertainties had been estimated according to the knowledge at that time. New highly accurate density measurements on standard seawater are reported. The validation using the new density measurements suggests that the uncertainty in density of TEOS‑10 (and EOS‑80) and that of some of the underlying density measurements are underestimated.
