Abstract: The salt stress response of Clostridium acetobutylicum was analyzed to identify protective substances and key genes to increase solvent formation in saline medium. Arginine showed a positive effect on growth under salt stress. The arginine biosynthesis of C. acetobutylicum was enhanced by inactivating the corresponding repressor, significantly increasing butanol production. The transcriptome revealed interlinked amino acid biosyntheses and a connection between different stress responses in C. acetobutylicum, offering starting points for the further optimization of biobutanol fermentation.
