Abstract: Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient controlling plant growth and it is fundamental for the productivity of agricultural ecosystems; however, excess P in an environment causes eutrophication. Long-term accumulation of P in soils may cause environmental problems for decades even after reducing the anthropogenic P input into agro-ecosystems. A better understanding of the processes and characteristics that influence P adsorption, desorption, and solute transport in porous media is helping in assessing the availability of P for a sustainable agricultural production and productivity.
