Abstract: Within this PhD project, β-sheet forming SAP systems were investigated for their hydrogel properties, their influence on cell response, their intrinsic antimicrobial activity and their antibiotic delivery potential. Overall, this thesis showed that P11-SAP hydrogels possess a number of properties that are necessary to develop them into potential candidates in novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of periodontitis.
