Abstract: During transient engine operation, conditions occur that result in increased fuel consumption and emissions. This issue is addressed for marine diesel engines. Real application examples are the highly dynamic ship maneuvers, which are characterized by varying engine commands and states of motion of the vessel. For the propulsion systems and thus also for the energy supplying engines, this results in operating profiles with fluctuating energy demand. Analyzing methods are presented and optimization potentials identified for fuel saving and emission reduction of both existing and future systems.
