Abstract: Polyphosphate (polyP) accumulation by certain microorganisms can influence the aquatic phosphorus (P) cycle by regulating the P flux in the benthic layer. However, it is only partially understood how microbial polyP storage affects the aquatic phosphate concentration. This question was thus investigated a series of incubations of both environmental and cultured samples from the Baltic Sea coast. Ultimately, we determined the relationship between microbial phosphate uptake and polyP accumulation under changing conditions, as well as identified the microorganisms responsible for polyP storage.
