Abstract: Since exposure to inhalable substances such as fibers or fine dusts is associated with the development of pulmonary fibrosis various in vitro cell models capable of detecting mechanistic changes due to pollutant exposure were developed in this work. Models of different complexity were exposed to particles of various sources and investigated regarding their inflammatory, (secondary) genotoxic and fibrotic potential. The studies have shown that the models are suitable to capture mechanistic processes involved in the development of pulmonary fibrosis and thus facilitate toxicity assessment.
