Abstract: Acute sigmoid diverticulitis is common and is often diagnosed through costly and radiation-intensive abdominal computed tomography (CT). This study demonstrates that in uncomplicated cases, ultrasound alone is sufficient, and an additional CT scan rarely changes the treatment plan. Routine CT scanning is therefore unnecessary. It should only be performed in cases of complications or unclear ultrasound results, which applied to 45.5% of the patients. Incidental findings were detected in 10.6% of cases, but the absence of CT would not have posed a significant risk.
