Abstract: A new method was developed to quantify wear in the bearing surfaces of explanted hip endoprostheses. This includes the arrangement of the measurement data points on the bearing surface, the identification of the abrasion area in the measurement data points by analysing the curvatures and the reconstruction of the non-abrasive geometry with a sphere. The suitability of this method was demonstrated both by applying it to a highly scaled specimen with known reference data and to a real explant head.
