Abstract: Harbour seals often commute between haul-out places and feeding grounds. With submission of this dissertation, two direct mechanisms were examined, with which harbour seals could achieve these performances. Hereby, it could be demonstrated, that seals can localise goals with the help of landmarks drawing on multiple strategies. Likewise, it could be demonstrated, that the seals can be very precise while estimating distances, even under visual masking. Thus, both mechanisms could allocate valuable information for orientation and navigation in the highly variable habitat of the harbour seals.
