Abstract: The mixed methods study investigates to what extent learning with competence grids promotes the fulfillment of the basic needs of students in inclusive biology lessons. The questionnaire study (N=92) shows that the experience of autonomy and relatedness are promoted significantly more than in regular classes. The interview study (N=12) also points to the promotion of the experience of competence. Based on case analyses (N=6), practical recommendations for a basic needs-oriented biology education with competence matrices were developed and summarized in the form of mind maps.
