Abstract: Phosphorus is crucial for life and global agriculture, but its nonrenewable nature makes it difficult to recover. The hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process, which uses excess moisture in sewage sludge, is an environmentally friendly and feasible method for treating moist sludge without pre-drying. This study investigates the effect of pH and acid-base additives on phosphorus mobilization, hydrochar properties, and the economic viability of sulfuric acid requirements for leaching phosphorus from sewage sludge hydrochar.
