Abstract: Poultry (laying hens and broilers) require efficient phosphorus (P) use. We studied how they adapt to reduced P intake. Age and strain effects were significant for sensitivity to reduced P. While chicks are most affected by P depletion, older birds can compensate. Gut microbiota seem to play a minor role in P efficiency in the organsimal biosystem. Reducing P supply is possible but requires careful planning for optimal health and production.
