The thesis investigates the oxygen dynamics in the deep layers of the four sub-basins
in the central Baltic Sea during the last 70 years and the possible reaction of the
system to the reduced nutrient forcing. It was found that the overall deoxygenation
during the study period is manifested as the shift in oxygen consumption from the
water column to the sediments. In addition, the remote sub-basins receive, at the
moment, almost no oxygen from the Major Baltic Inflows. No hysteresis effect was observed
in the system's reaction to the reduced nutrient input in sensitivity experiments.

Die Dissertation untersucht die Dynamik des Sauerstoffs in den Tiefenwassern der Zentralen
Ostsee über die letzten 70 Jahre und die mögliche Reaktion des Systems auf die reduzierte
Nährstoffzufuhr. Der Gesamt-Sauerstoffentzug während des untersuchten Zeitraums manifestiert
sich als Wechsel im Sauerstoffverbrauch von der Wassersäule zu den Sedimenten. Außerdem
erhalten die abgelegenen Gebiete derzeit fast keinen Sauerstoff aus Major Baltic Inflows.
In Sensitivitätsexperimenten wurde kein Hystereseeffekt in der Reaktion des Systems
auf die reduzierte Nährstoffzufuhr beobachtet.
