Abstract: Streptococcus pyogenes is a human pathogenic bacterium that can cause severe invasive infections. In this study, the role of the enzyme GapN in metabolism was investigated. It was shown that GapN is essential and the main source of NADPH in S. pyogenes. As a target for new specific drugs against S. pyogenes infections, potential inhibitors of GapN identified by in silico studies and structural analysis were investigated. Seven compounds specifically inhibited GapN, were able to kill S. pyogenes and could be suitable for the development of a new therapeutic agent.
