Abstract: This work investigated the regulatory properties of the small protein SbtB, one of the main regulators of the inorganic carbon-concentrating mechanism (CCM) in cyanobacteria. Through its ability to bind a variety of adenyl nucleotides, SbtB is capable of sensing the energy, inorganic carbon and light states of the cell, to modulate the activity of multiple components of the CCM allowing cyanobacteria to adapt to changing carbon and light conditions. The regulation targets of SbtB include the bicarbonate transporter SbtA, the glycogen branching enzyme GlgB and gene expression of the CCM.
