Abstract: This cumulative habilitation thesis deals with the Dummerstorf long-term selection mouse line DUhTP and its suitability as a model for metabolic flexibility. The present thesis consists of nine papers that characterize the genetic model and investigate the influence of voluntary exercise on a running wheel as well as the effects of controlled treadmill training. The overall aim of these investigations was to identify the mechanisms that enable the extraordinary running performance of DUhTP mice (“marathon mice”) on the one hand and efficient energy supply on the other.
