Abstract: Different approaches to estimate mortality in small populations are present in the literature and choosing among them for practical applications is not a trivial task. This thesis reviews, evaluates, and applies promising demographic methods to estimate full mortality schedules in small populations. It specifically focuses on the identification of gaps in the methodological literature, the evaluation of methods by means of a simulation study, and the practical application to real world data.
